Case Study - Complex Smart Home Renovation

Integrating iPad Controls, 3 Automated Garage Doors, and Whole-Home Apple HomeKit

Canny Electrics took over and progressed one large-scale residential smart home renovation, completing a complex existing-wiring environment and unifying the property’s systems under Apple HomeKit.

The project included iPad mini controllers in every room in place of traditional light switches, one smart intercom with electric strike release, and three motorised garage doors.

The result was a near-complete smart home platform that brought access control, lighting, blinds, and garage automation into a cohesive Apple-based ecosystem, with final stages covering tennis court and sunroom electrical works.

The Challenge

This was not a standard smart-home installation from scratch.

Canny Electrics took over a complex renovation project that had originally been started by another contractor. That meant the work had to be completed around existing wiring conditions and previous installation decisions.

The main technical challenge was creating a cohesive and reliable smart-home environment while working with infrastructure already in place. Existing wiring needed to be assessed and re-routed where required, so the final system could function properly across multiple integrated categories.

The project also had an ambitious control concept. Instead of using traditional wall switches, every room would use an iPad mini as the main control interface. On top of that, the property included three motorised garage doors, motorised blinds throughout, and whole-home lighting automation through Apple HomeKit.

The Solution

Canny Electrics delivered a staged smart-home completion with the following scope:

  • Worked with the existing wiring infrastructure left from the earlier phase of the renovation
  • Re-routed wiring where required to support final system completion
  • Installed iPad mini controllers in every room to replace traditional light switches
  • Installed 1 smart intercom at the main entry
  • Integrated 1 electric strike release for controlled entry access
  • Configured access support for the driveway and main entry
  • Automated 3 motorised garage doors
  • Automated motorised blinds throughout the property
  • Automated all lighting on Apple HomeKit
  • Continued the final-stage works for:
    • Tennis court lights
    • Sunroom power
    • Sunroom lighting
